Palm Springs by Street Signs
There are more than 1000 communities across the Coachella Valley. Many of these communities are gated, with or without manned gates, but nevertheless gated communities. Gated communities have very specific identities and home owner associations that set the tone of the community. When you are looking to find a home in Palm Springs, you need to become familiar with the various communities that meet your specific desires. An experienced Realtor can help you narrow your search.
Palm Springs, however, is uniquely different from many other Coachella Valley cities because the various communities within the City of Palm Springs are for the most part un-gated and therefore, could be more difficult to identify to the untrained eye.
However, there is one easy way for you to recognize the community you are in. Look at the street signs!
Palm Springs has an ingenious system of street signs that allows you to quickly see where you are.
You may be at the corner of Sunrise Way and Verbena, but look again – you are also in the Movie Colony east district of Palm Springs California. The top sign above the street signs identifies the community. The Movie Colony has its own identity. This is where a lot of “old Hollywood” used to live back in the day.
Tucked up against the mountains in a green oasis area of Palm Springs is The Mesa. In the past, this area was the home of Sunny and Mary Bono. It is still today the home of many stars who want the climate of Palm Springs but the privacy and country feel of a relaxed mountain-side community. How do you know you are in The Mesa?
Look at the street signs. There will be a green and white sign identifying the intersection you are at in Palm Springs – but, look again, above this sign is the identifier – The Mesa
Twin Palms, on the other hand, is an area south of Hwy 111 / Palm Canyon in South Palm Springs. A lot of mid-century architecture is evident when you drive through these streets. Identify it by the street sign you see at the left.
Next time you are driving around Palm Springs, make a point of looking at the street signs. Then, look at the top sign which identifies the community you are in and if you can keep walking or continue driving you may discover the boundaries of that community and the types of homes and the ambiance of the neighborhood. Many of these communities have loose associations. Neighbors get to know neighbors and social interactions and activities are created.
Every time you adventure around Palm Springs you will see something new. Enjoy!
